With Ashraf and Asma from Kerala, India . They have worked many years in the Middle East in living and working conditions that amount to slavery. They have returned home ill. Since then they are unable to work and in debt.

Kerala, a state in South India is the largest 'exporter' of workers to the Middle East. The emigration of Keralites can be only temporary, due to the immigration policies set forth by the Gulf States which prohibit permanent resettlement of foreign nationals. Amongst the migrants from Kerala, the unskilled ones who sacrifice so much to support their families suffer serious human rights violations and are thrown out of these countries when they are deemed not useful anymore. Very few manage to escape the dramatic slave-like conditions they are subject to. For most of them, returning home is only temporary relief as their financial situation remains dismal. Furthermore, having suffered irreversible damage, they are incapable of working like before in their homeland and therefore remain in a vicious circle of poverty.

Avec Asraf et Asma, originaires du Kérala en Inde. Ils ont travaillé de nombreuses annnées dans les pays du Golf dans des conditions d'esclaves. Ils sont retournés chez eux malades. Depuis ils sont incapables de travailler, et endettés.

Le Kérala, un état du sud de l'Inde est le plus gros "exportateur" de travailleurs au Moyen Orient. En 2010, environ 2.5 millions de Kéralais travaillaient là-bas. Leur émigration ne peut être que temporaire car les lois d'immigration des pays du Golf interdisent l'installation permanente des étrangers. Parmi les migrants du Kérala, ceux sans qualifications sont victimes de graves violations des droits de l'homme. Quand jugés inutiles, ils sont alors jetés dehors après avoir vécu dans des conditions d'esclaves. (Peu d'entre eux réussissent à s'échapper.) Mais pour la plupart, retourner au pays n'est qu'un soulagement temporaire. Leurs situations financières sont très précaires et ils souffrent de dommages irréversibles. Désormais incapables de travailler comme avant, ils restent plus que jamais coincés dans le cercle vicieux de la pauvreté.

With Patricia and her baby. Ten years ago, Patricia left Nigeria to escape poverty with a smuggler who wanted to sell her as a prostitute in Europe. On the way, she managed to escape and since then she has been surviving in Tangier in Morocco, hoping that one day she will manage to reach the fortress Europe.

Avec Patricia et son bébé. Il y a 10 ans, Patricia a quitté le Nigeria pour échapper à la pauvreté avec un passeur. En route elle a compris qu'il voulait la vendre comme prostituée en Europe et a réussi à s'enfuir. Depuis elle survit à Tanger au Maroc, espérant un jour réussir à pénétrer dans la forteresse Europe. Néanmoins, jusqu'à aujourdhui toutes ses tentatives ont échoué.

With Mireille. Mireille left the Republic Democratic of Congo in order to migrate to Europe. As soon as she managed to put her feet on the island of Samos in Greece, she was taken to a refugee camp. She has been living there in inhuman conditions for 2 years without any means. She is still waiting for the decision of the authorities regarding her asylum request.

Avec Mireille. Mireille a quitté la République démocratique du Congo pour émigrer en Europe. Dès qu’elle a pu poser ses pieds sur l’île de Samos en Grèce, elle a été conduite dans un camp de réfugiés. Elle y vit dans des conditions inhumaines sans aucune ressource depuis 2 ans. Elle attend toujours la décision des autorités quant à sa demande d’asile.

With Ashok (fake name). Ashok is a missing person. He has been a victim of an enforced disappearance* in Pakistan. *Victims of enforced disappearance are people who have literally disappeared from their loved ones and their community. They go missing when state officials (or someone acting with state consent) grabs them from the street or from their homes and then deny it, or refuse to say where they are. – Definition by Amnesty International. After being detained and tortured for almost 2 years, he managed to escape death and fled abroad. He is now a “recognized” refugee and lives hidden in a secret location. Nevertheless his legal status doesn’t allow him to work, so all his basic needs depend entirely on charity.

And Wael and Elissavet. Wael flew from Syria 10 years ago. He is also a recognized refugee. Having papers and being allowed to work didn't mean life became easier. In Greece he has experienced and witnessed exploitation, poverty, racism, violence and injustice. Finally, after about 7 years living in Greece, the Asylum Service of Greece has out of the blue revoked his asylum. But hope is his motto. Wael defines this chapter of his life as an empowerment journey. In Athens, he met his girlfriend Elissavet.

Avec Ashok (faux nom). Ashok est une personne disparue. Il a été victime d'une disparition forcée au Pakistan. *Les victimes de disparitions forcées sont des gens qui ont littéralement disparu de leurs proches et de leur communauté. Ils disparaissent quand des officiels du gouvernement (ou quelqu'un agissant pour le gouvernement) les kidnappent dans la rue ou chez eux puis le démentent, ou refusent de dire où ils sont. – Définition d' Amnesty International. Après avoir été détenu et torturé pendant presque 2 ans, il a réussi à échapper à la mort et a fui à l'étranger. Il est maintenant un réfugié “officiel” et vit caché dans un lieu secret. Néanmoins son statut légal ne l'autorise pas à travailler, donc tous ses besoins de base dépendent entièrement de la charité.

Et Wael et Elissavet. Wael a fui la Syrie il y a 10 ans. Il est également un refugié “officiel”. Avoir ses papiers et l’autorisation de travailler n’a pas pour autant signifié que la vie est devenue plus facile. En Grèce il y a connu et a été témoin de l'exploitation, de la pauvreté, du racisme, de la violence et de l’injustice. Enfin, environ après sept années de vie en Grèce, le service d’asile grec a subitement révoqué son asile. Mais l'espoir est sa devise. Wael pense que ce chapitre de sa vie l’a rendu plus fort. À Athènes, il a rencontré sa petite amie Elissavet
